about

In September of 2022, a group of about 20 people gathered at Kanaskat-Palmer State Park in Washington to camp for a weekend and create two 22-minute sound art compositions. This is the result.

CAMPBIENT is an annual sound art residency that brings together 22 people for 44 hours to conceptualize, produce, and record sound art compositions in a natural setting. Participants were randomly split into two groups, each responsible for one side of the record, with the only caveat being that a continuous field recording base track is audible throughout the piece.

The residency includes sound-related workshops and creative activities, and a start-to-finish audio production process, the results of which are on this vinyl record and distributed digitally. Participating artists camp out, share meals, and collaborate in field recording, sound making, and creative play. CAMPBIENT is held in a new location every year, and all audio production and activities are off-grid and battery-powered.

This year, we were reminded that while we are all there to try and interact with "nature", it does not care about our goals. In the middle of the weekend and a wind storm, a gigantic branch came crashing down nearly crushing two of our organizers. It was the park's shelter in the end which stopped it from turning the event into a tragedy.

The Force of Nature.

Weather is just part of the unpredictability in making art in public spaces, away from the conveniences and dependability of a studio. By utilizing state parks rather than private land, the residency underscores an awareness of the commons, and an obligation for it’s stewardship. Public spaces that straddle the natural and built environment are rich with questions of social equity and accessibility, environmental justice and sustainability, as well as those of artistic process, critical analysis, and aesthetics. It is these questions that were explored sonically and dialogically in the making of this recording. Sound artist and educator Betsey Biggs was this year’s special guest, whose knowledge and insights greatly contributed to the residency’s conceptual rigor and artistic praxis.
